RAC teaches students in the South West driver safety

SOUTH West students were given a lesson on driver safety this week with the RAC’s community education team.

The RAC’s senior media and government relations manager Liz Carey said RAC taught students in years 10 to 12 the importance of safe driving.

Students are informed of the effects of alcohol, drugs and reckless behaviour on driving and being a responsible passenger.

“Last year, 184 died in road crashes and 25 of those were killed in the South West district,” she said.

“In 2014, drivers aged 17 to 24 accounted for 22 per cent of all WA road fatalities despite only making up 12 per cent of the population.”

Ms Carey said the results reinforce the need to educate young drivers about safe driving.

Cape Naturalist College’s head of health and physical education Jacqueline Bovell said the program was an important part of the school’s curriculum and supports its school drug education and road aware program.

Year 10 students at Cape Naturalist College took part in the program and were shown films of young people who had been involved in road fatalities caused by unsafe driving practices.

The road safety message has been delivered to over 400,000 WA students since 2002 to highlight the dangers and risks associated with driving.
