Fewer fatal traffic accidents in first quarter

Fewer people died in traffic accidents in the first three months of this year, but the Traffic Police will pay closer attention to the two most vulnerable groups - motorcyclists and elderly pedestrians.

Latest Traffic Police figures show that road accidents resulting in injury rose by 11.5 per cent to 2,000 cases in the first quarter of the year, although fatal accidents dipped 7 per cent to 40.

Fatal motorcycle accidents fell by 26 per cent to 20. But there were 1,061 injury accidents involving motorcycles, up 15 per cent from the same period last year. The numbers highlight how motorcycle riders remain at risk.

There were 39 injury-related accidents involving elderly pedestrians, up from 38 previously. Fatal accidents involving this group dipped to four, from five in the same period last year.

Traffic Police Commander Sam Tee told The Straits Times that he is determined to improve these statistics.

One idea being considered is having driving and riding simulators in driving schools, allowing learners to appreciate the challenges faced by motorbike riders, and to understand why riders may not always be visible to drivers.

The Traffic Police will step up campaigns to highlight the vulnerability of elderly pedestrians, who may not be as alert and who also take longer to cross the road.

Commander Tee called the Land Transport Authority's Silver Zone for elderly pedestrians an "excellent initiative".

With features like lower speed limits, more warning signs, new road markings and raised zebra crossings, Silver Zones will be set up in estates with a high concentration of elderly residents.

The plan is to have them in 35 locations by 2020, up from the two today in Bukit Merah View and Jurong West Street 52.

Commander Tee said he is meeting transport companies that own fleets of trucks, to persuade them to consider moving away from trip-based incentive schemes, in order to ease the pressure on drivers to drive fast and make as many trips as possible.

"We are stepping up enforcement and the risk for these companies is quite high, because we know the routes they ply," he said.

"Once a driver is disqualified from driving, (the companies) will have downtime because it is not so easy to find another in the current labour situation."

Asked why the Traffic Police have not mandated new tamper-proof speed limiters for large vehicles, he said: "As far as we know, there is no speed limiter that is completely tamper-proof. Some are just more difficult to tamper with than others."

There were 765 injury accidents involving heavy vehicles throughout last year, down slightly from 773 in 2013. But fatal accidents involving these vehicles rose from 43 in 2013 to 44 last year. Figures for the first quarter of this year were not yet available.

Denim Day raises sex crimes awareness

#Advocates Crisis Support Services is encouraging individuals and businesses in Craig and Moffat County to participate in Denim Day on Wednesday.

#Denim Day is an international effort to raise awareness about sexual violence and sexual assault. It began in Rome, Italy, in 1992 when an 18-year-old girl was raped by her 45-year-old driving instructor while on her first driving lesson.

#“The man was convicted and sentenced to jail but the conviction was overturned on appeal in 1999. The High Court declared ‘because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them ... and by removing the jeans ... it was no longer rape but consensual sex,’” according to Advocates Executive Director Sharon Farquhar. “Enraged women of the Italian Parliament protested the verdict by wearing jeans on the steps of parliament.”

#ACSS is asking those who participate in Denim Day to notify them, post to the Advocates Facebook page and email photos of their Denim Day team of co-workers, students, family and friends to acss.sfarquhar@gmail.com. Last year, six Moffat County businesses and government employers participated by having their employees wear jeans on Denim Day.

#“One in five women and one in 71 men in the U.S. will be victims of sexual violence at some point in their lives. One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18 years old. In eight out of 10 cases of rape, the victim knew the person who sexually assaulted them,” Farquhar said. “Rape is the most under-reported crime: 63 percent of sexual assaults are not reported to police. Only 12 percent of child sexual abuse is reported to authorities.”

#In 2014, ACSS responded to assist 19 victims of sexual violence, of which 12 were adults and seven were child victims, as well as 15 secondary victims, including friends, families and witnesses.

river who killed pensioner had girlfriend ON HIS LAP for driving lesson when car lost control

Crash: Nathaniel Cooper outside the court in Aberdeen

A man had his girlfriend sitting on his lap when his car killed a pensioner then ploughed into his caravan.

Nathaniel Cooper, 30, faces jail after being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

He was teaching Kylie Johnston how to drive when they lost control of his Daihatsu Terios and crashed at East Balthangie campsite in Aberdeenshire.

The 4x4 ploughed into the side of Andrew MacKay’s static caravan and knocked him down.

Cooper, of Inverbervie, was yesterday found guilty after a five day trial at the High Court in Aberdeen.

His ex-partner Johnston, 26, pleaded guilty in January, reports the Daily Record.

Yesterday, Lord Stewart told the jury that they had helped make legal history because it was the first case of its kind in the UK.

He said: “The word tragedy is rather too frequently used but this case seems to be a real tragedy.”

Dad-of-two Cooper had Johnston, of Stonehaven, on his knee as he showed her how to steer and work the pedals.

Giving evidence, 4ft 11in Johnston said she could only reach the pedals when she slid down the seat. She said: “I’ve never driven in my life so it was scary for me. I didn’t know what to do.”

She said she was relying on Cooper to operate them.

Johnston claimed Cooper grabbed the steering wheel after the car veered too close to the campsite toilet block and said the car went out of control.

The 4x4 accelerated, hit a fence then struck Andrew, 65. His partner Mary Dobbin, 58, from Dumbarton, was trapped inside their holiday home.

Lord Stewart deferred sentence until May 8 for reports.

Teen Jones Gives Xfinity Vets A Driving Lesson In Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas – Teen-ager Erik Jones turned his first NASCAR XFINITY Series pole at Texas Motor Speedway into his first series victory Friday night, schooling Sprint Cup stars Brad Keselowski and Dale Earnhardt Jr. en route to the checkered flag in the 19th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts 300.

Jones, 18, held off Keselowski on a restart on Lap 175 of the scheduled 200 around TMS’ high-banked, 1.5-mile quadoval for a margin of victory of 1.624-seconds in the first night race of the season. Jones’ first series win came in his ninth start. In the process Jones became the second-youngest series winner at TMS at 18 years, 10 months, 11 days _ a record set last year by Chase Elliott at 18 years, 4 months and 7 days when he scored his first series victory in this event.

“This is surreal. That confidence is something I never doubted in myself,” said Jones, who shared the Victory Lane celebration with crew chief Michael Wheeler. “This is just amazing. We beat Cup guys tonight! Just a really cool day and something I’m really proud of not only for myself but everybody at Joe Gibbs Racing. It’s a great feeling knowing you had to work for it, that it was not just handed to you.”

Jones, driver of the No. 20 GameStop/Mortal Kombat X Toyota Camry, previously had competed at TMS in the NASCAR Camping World Series. He started fifth and finished 11th in last June’s annual summer night race.

Jones took the lead for good on Lap 151 from Junior and paced the final 50 circuits. Jones led six times for a race-high 79 laps, 23 more than “Bad Brad,” who started from the rear of the field because of “unapproved adjustments.” Prior to taking the lead, Jones ran up to the back of Junior’s rear bumper and gave him a warning tap.

“That was fun and frustrating,” Jones said. “I knew what he was doing. It was hard racing, two drivers giving 100 percent and giving it all they got, saving nothing. That’s what it’s all about. He definitely raced us hard and we raced him hard. Man, that’s one I can’t wait to go back and watch. That was so much fun.  At the end of the day we got to race against Dale Earnhardt Jr., a guy I’ve watched forever on TV. Man, we put on a great show. I was having fun _ one of the most fun times I’ve had in the race car.”

Keselowski, meanwhile, sounded the horn for NASCAR’s latest youth movement, known as NASCAR Next, after battling Jones through the final restart.

“It was good side-by-side racing there with the double-file restart,” Keselowski said. “We ran wide-open there, and that’s always cool when you’re running wide-open in one of these things side-by-side. It was just a matter of who was going to lift first and neither of us lifted and he cleared me and drove by me.  It’s just part of the deal. We came up a bit short. We were pretty strong at times and maybe had something for him. We got a little damage on that last pit stop cycle, which I think probably hurt us a little bit, but who knows? It was just up-and-down and barley missed it there at the end.”

Keselowski said he really didn’t consider the fact that Jones, a fellow-Michigander, celebrated his high school graduation ceremony at TMS last year so he could compete in that NCWTS event.

“We’re all racing and racing’s a very selfish sport, so you don’t spend a lot of time worrying about others,” said Keselowski, who scored his 11th top-10 result in 15 races at TMS. “I’ve watched him race in the Truck Series and he does a great job. He’s certainly right there where that ‘youth movement’ demands you to be successful. This is certainly a huge notch in his belt and I’m happy for him.

“This is definitely not a good time to sit out of a car. You see this where it seems no one new is coming up and then where everyone new is coming up. It seems to be changing very rapidly in this last year or so. It’s a bad time to get hurt because there’s plenty of youth in this sport. That’s part of it. I don’t want to get out of the seat because I love racing _ and I don’t know how to make money doing anything else.”

Keselowski, driver of the No.22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang fielded by Penske Racing, overtook Junior and his No. 88 Goody’s Chevrolet Camaro on Lap 167. Keselowski’s last best shot to overtake Jones was set up after series veteran Brendan Gaughan and Cale Conley crashed exiting Turn 2 after Conley’s car blew a right front tire. But Jones _ starting on the inside on the advice of NCWTS team-owner and Cup regular Kyle Busch _ held his ground on the restart against Keselowski, the 2012 Cup champion.

Regan Smith finished fourth in the No. 7 TaxSlayer.com Chevy, with Austin Dillon fifth in the No. 33 Ruud Chevy. The top rookie finisher was Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr., who placed sixth in the No. 6 AdvoCare Ford after starting eighth and running as high as second.

“Good sixth-place finish, I think it’s the best for me with Roush Fenway,” Wallace said. “Exciting night for us. I could not go on the bottom; I hated the bottom. Every time I got on the bottom I wasted like eight years down there. It never helps when you’re trapped on the bottom. But we’re showing progression each and every week and that’s all I can ask for. Our time will come soon. I’m excited for Bristol, Richmond _ those are good tracks for me.”

Earlier Friday, Jones qualified on-pole at 185.166 mph. The race, slowed by five cautions, took 2 hours, 15 minutes and 21 seconds. Jones’ winning average speed was 132.989 mph.

Team-owner Joe Gibbs acknowledged that Jones is on the “fast track” to an eventual Cup ride but will remain focused on his current Truck Series commitment.

“Right now with Erik, we felt like he had a full plate this year because he’s running for a championship in Trucks, so Kyle (Busch) wanted him to do that and we all did, too,” Gibbs said. “He’s maxed-out as far as the number of XFINITY races he can run because some of them conflict with Trucks. As far as down the road, there’s no question that at some point very quick he’s going to be in a Cup car some. I think we have a bit of a strategy there that we talked about. I think he’s ready to go at any time. We’ll just work with that as we go forward.”

How to become a driving instructor with Jon Mathews Driving School

A UK driving school in Leicester, providing low cost driving school franchises in the East Midlands, is recruiting to fill driving instructor vacancies to meet business needs.

After becoming a driving instructor one expects to make a profitable return on investment. But the reality for most instructors is very unsavoury. Long term expensive contracts, with very few pupils to teach seems to be the norm; and at below cost lesson prices. Some driving instructors find themselves returning to paid employment, bankrupt court, or giving up the coveted ADI registration. But there's is hope round the next turn. A driving school franchise with Jon Matthews Driving School is a manouvre some people in the business sector might consider worth the instructor's while.

Dynamically run to meet the needs of learner-drivers, as well as, driving instructors, Jon Matthews Driving School has managed to keep her small fleet busy throughout the years with hardly a dull week. This has resulted in new expansion to include Warwickshire. Even Londoners are interested. Leicester’s driving school market has blossomed to the point where it must now plan for future plans. In February, the driving school announced vacancies for driving instructors wanted for Leicester, Loughborough and Hinckley.

With L-test tuition enquires up, it is no surprise this enterprising driving school is making a niche for itself. Business trends suggest that when the economy is booming more people have disposable income for self improvement. With employers looking for a better skilled workforce, job applicants with a full driving licence improve their job prospects.

Due to Britain’s economic growth, enquiries for driving instructor services were up 40 fold in the first half of 2014 and demand remained high throughout the year. With 2015 first quarter figures expected by mid April, Jon Matthews Driving School expects to see a turnover up 200% on last year alone. There has never been a better time to become a driving instructor in Leicester, and Loughborough. So what’s on offer at Jon Matthews Driving School?

Instructors can improve their earning power with minimum of 25 prepaid pupils, yearly. The franchise fees ranging from £30.00 to £150.00 weekly, is made even more attractive with an optional zero contract. So how much can a driving instructor earn after expenses?
