Las Vegas Shooting Suspect

Nowsch, the 19-year-old suspect in the Las Vegas shooting of a mother of four was high on marijuana when he surrendered and was questioned by the police. Erich Nowsch was smoking marijuana during the brief stand-off at his home on Thursday. Nowsch’s attorney, Augustus Claus claims this casts a shadow of doubt on any information Nowsch gave after being arrested.

Las Vegas police knew Nowsch was smoking marijuana before he was arrested. The police allowed Nowsch to smoke while they were trying to calm him down. They knew Nowsch was smoking, encouraged him to smoke and watched him smoke marijuana. marijuana use is illegal in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas police and prosecutors are not commenting. Questions are being referred to Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson who also had no comment at that time. However, Wolfson says he has all he needs to charge Nowsch with murder and is not ruling out the death penalty.

Nowsch, allegedly, shot and killed 44-year-old Tammy Meyers in Las Vegas after a traffic altercation that was originally thought to be road rage. This altercation was several blocks from the house.

HTML5 video is not supported!

Later, Las Vegas police say, Nowsch, the shooting suspect, told his friends that he shot at the green car when he saw someone waving a gun at him. Police did find six .45-caliber shell casings.  Meyers’ Buick Park Avenue has tinted windows and this incident was said to have happened late at night. Nowsch assumed the people in the green Buick were after him. He was at the park when Meyers was giving her daughter a driving lesson in the school parking lot. Nowsch was alarmed by the green Buick driving around the parking lot and called a friend with a silver Audi sedan to pick him up.

Nowsch’s Las Vegas lawyers are planning to plead self-defense. First they plan to question and compare the versions of the occurrence by Las Vegas Metro police and the victim’s family. Las Vegas police did state in the arrest report that Nowsch felt he was being followed when he saw the green vehicle driving around the parking lot.

Nowsch’s friends told Las Vegas police that a friend drove him so he could follow the green vehicle Meyers was driving. According to police, Nowsch stopped in front of Meyers’ home, got out and fired a handgun at Meyers’ vehicle and sped off.

Then Meyers went home to drop off her daughter and get Brandon, her oldest son. Brandon got a handgun and they went in search for the silver Audi that picked up Nowsch. Meyers and her son Brandon found the vehicle in question and returned home with the vehicle following them. After that, Nowsch, the Las Vegas shooting suspect gunned her down, in front of her home. Brandon, 22, got off three shots at a silver Audi with his 9mm.  Nowsch and at least one other person were in the vehicle at the time. Tammy Meyers was shot in the head. Meyers was transported to the University Medical Center, in Las Vegas, where she died February 14th after two days on life-support.

Nowsch says Brandon pointed a gun at him before anyone fired a shot. Also Nowsch claims he received death threats before the original altercation. However, it has not been stated when, where or what those death threats were.

After the shootings,  Nowsch, took off to a friend’s apartment showing off the handgun and bragging about the shooting. He said that “he got those kids” that were a threat to him. After Nowsch was arrested, Robert Meyers (husband) told the media they knew Nowsch and had helped him in the past. Prior to this time, Mr. Meyers denied knowing Nowsch because he was “told to.”

Nowsch’s preliminary hearing for the Las Vegas shooting had been scheduled for March 10th however, prosecutors asked for a later date because Metro police are still investigating. Also police are still looking for the second suspect who drove Nowsch that night.

Nowsch is being held for murder with a deadly weapon as well as two counts of discharging a firearm at a vehicle in Las Vegas.

What Happened When Will Smith Had Alfonso Ribeiro Give His Son Driving Lessons

Alfonso Ribeiro is no Carlton, especially when it comes to driving.

That's what Will Smith discovered, when he asked his "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" co-star to teach his oldest son, Trey Smith, how to drive.

On Wednesday's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Smith explained why he later regretted asking Ribeiro to give his son some driving lessons.

Unlike the conservative Carlton that Ribeiro played on television, the real Ribeiro is an avid race car driver, and even won several celebrity motor races in the 1990s.

So Smith said he thought it would be a good idea when Trey turned 16 and got his driver's license to set him up with Ribeiro so he could learn "how to drive like a real driver."

Will Smith Goes Old School, Rapping Hit 'Summertime'

After a few lessons, Trey, who's 22 now, learned "how to catch the car if it drifts and slides," among other things, Smith explained to host Jimmy Kimmel.

"Then I get a call from the pastor of the church that he was doing donuts in the church parking lot," Smith added.

The lesson of the story, Smith told the audience: "Don't educate your kids."

As for his other son, Jaden, who just turned 16 and got his learner's permit, Smith said he already had a head start from years of driving golf carts when he was younger.

Power fully restored; snow emergency downgraded

Electric service to South Central Power customers who were knocked offline Monday night when a transformer blew was fully restored this morning.
At the outage's height, nearly 5,100 Ross County customers were without power around 8:45 p.m. South Central Power had that number down to just under 1,500 by around 11 p.m.
Road crews have been working to make streets passable throughout the early morning hours, and at around 10 a.m., the Ross County Sheriff's Office rolled back the snow emergency from Level 2 -- meaning motorists should only venture out on the roads if absolutely necessary -- to Level 1, meaning drivers should use caution and watch for slick spots. Pike County remains under a Level 2 designation.
The Ohio Department of Transportation reports having crews out throughout the night and into the morning hours, clearing as much as 10 inches of snow off major highways and state roads in some areas of District 9, which covers eight counties including Ross and Pike. The task this morning was made more difficult, according to the agency, because of bitter cold temperatures that froze compacted snow on the roads, as well as some blowing and drifting.
While snow is being cleared by state, city and county crews, school children across the area are enjoying a second consecutive day off school that included Monday's Presidents Day holiday. Ohio University-Chillicothe still plans to reopen its campus at noon today after having closed at 3 p.m. Monday at the height of the storm.
Several organizations have cancelled activities for today, including food pantries at Church Triumphant and Open Door Church and at the Good Samaritan pantry location. Goodwill centers across the region are also closed, and Frontier Community Services adult day program and Ross County Sheriff's Office day reporting program have been cancelled the second straight day.
The Pike County Senior Center canceled home-delivered meal routes today, including those in the county, Village of Piketon and Village of Waverly. Weather-permitting, the routes will be attempted on Wednesday. Meals will be served today at the congregate site for those who can make it. Call 740-947-5555 for more information.
On the sports side, Huntington's boys varsity basketball game at Westfall and Piketon's game with Paint Valley have both been postponed to Wednesday night.

Female driver signs deal

Things just keep getting better for a stock car driver from Summerland.

Sarah Cornett-Ching has been racing since she was 12-years-old, and it all culminated Saturday at one of the grandest race tracks in all the land – Daytona International Speedway in Florida.

The 23-year-old spent the past week preparing for the Lucas Oil 200. And while she managed to complete 76 laps en route to a 31st place finish out of 40 cars, the real excitement may have come a few days earlier when she signed a multi-year contract with Race 101 to run in the ARCA series.

"I'm ecstatic, I can't wait," said Cornett-Ching, who is still in Daytona with her family. "It just means I'm going to get to do a lot more racing in the ARCA series and hopefully move up to the next class which is the truck or the Xfinity series."

Owner Tony Blanchard got to know Cornett-Ching during her time at the Race 101 driving school in North Carolina a few years ago. The two have stayed in touch and it appears to have paid off with a multi-year contact.

In a Race 101 press release about the signing, Blanchard praised his new driver, saying they will enter her in numerous racing events in both 2015 and beyond.

"We know we have something special in Sarah," says Blanchard.

"This is a determined young woman with enormous natural talent, great technical knowledge when it comes to fabrication and with enough charisma to take her a long way in this sport. Sarah put her head down to make Daytona happen, and her tenacious nature is exactly what we want behind the wheel of our equipment."

The team had some engine trouble during Friday morning’s qualifying session, but were able to swap motors to get her in the race for Saturday.

She described the race as a great learning experience.

"The actual finishing position is not great, but I had a really great learning weekend, and I couldn't have asked for anything else from my crew," she said.

It’s been a whirlwind past few months for the certified welder, who had to step away from racing while she worked in remote areas to save money in order to get back behind the wheel.

"I felt ready to go racing as a career in 2011," says Cornett-Ching. "Things didn't work out, and looking back I'm fine with that. I've grown as a person since then, and I feel like everything I have done to make this happen has made me who I am.

"Just last month I was clawing for funds to come and race at Daytona, now we're in a position where we have the means to put in a back-up engine and still go racing."

After she watches the upcoming Daytona 500, Cornett-Ching will head to North Carolina for some testing in Blanchard's super late model.

The next track she will be running is Talladega, with testing in April and the race in May.

"It's all pretty cool. Definitely exciting," she said.

Cornett-Ching has also developed BBAG (Beat By A Girl) Racing which she hopes to take with her to the next level.

We learn your driving lessons very seriously

A good driving school can help you learn much better than a cheap school. But one should never underestimate this. Sometimes this works the other way around. Good schools give bad driving lessons whereas cheap schools invest a lot in teaching the right methodology and ethics involved in driving. If you live in Tower Hamlets or in any other state or region, you should take your driving lessons very seriously. Driving lessons Tower Hamlets includes basic driving techniques that turn the teen of today into experts. The teens are highly driven towards the great driving power that attracts them to take over responsibilities of sensible human beings. Helping a teenager learn to drive as soon as possible and starting them off on the road to being a safe driver can go hand in and. It is an unfortunate fact that drivers aged between 17 and 24 are more likely to have an accident. If parents take an interest in their teenager's desire to start driving and support them throughout they are likely to learn the correct skills to help keep them safe.

Driving Lesson Tower Hamlets

Driving lessons allow the learners to know the road rules and regulations as set by the constitution. Beginners are accompanied by expert drivers who make new learners practice the skill of driving. Many young adults, being low on their budget usually choose a driving school based on how much or how little the instructors charge for each driving lesson. Of course, this is not the way to go if you really want to achieve the most out of your driving lessons and if you want to become a responsible driver. During the lessons, instructors will teach you perfect. If you want to learning how to drive a car, but you do not have time during the day, then there are some very good driving schools that have evening lessons as well.

Craven school board to pay for bus driver’s legal defense

Tawana Lewis, the activity bus driver facing charges after a fatal Dec. 13, 2014, accident in Wayne County, will be defended in court by counsel paid for by the Craven County Board of Education.
The board voted unanimously on Jan. 28 to provide for her legal defense.
Lewis, whose first court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 25 in Goldsboro, is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield, according to court documents.
Lewis, a teacher assistant and bus driver for the school system, was driving band students to New Bern following New Bern High School’s 4A State Championship win in Winston-Salem when she made a U-turn on U.S. 70 west of Goldsboro and was hit by an SUV driven by Fabiel Favela Betancourt, 40, of Goldsboro, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Betancourt was killed instantly, according to investigators. The crash occurred around 3 a.m.

There was no discussion by school board members during the Jan. 28 meeting concerning the issue. The item was approved as part of the board’s consent agenda — a six-page section of bulleted items including everything from equipment purchases to teacher recruitment.

Instructor cautions new Peterborough drivers to beware of phony driving schools

A Peterborough driving instructor is urging all new drivers to do their homework before signing up to take a G1 course.
Kevin Covert, who owns and operates Peterborough Driving School with his wife Heather, says more driving schools are opening and offering driving lessons for beginners, without proper approval from the Ministry of Transportation. It's a growing problem in the GTA, according to a Toronto Star investigation, and Mr. Covert says he's become aware of at least one Peterborough company that's wrongly-posed as a Ministry-approved school.
He suspects it won't be long before more companies open and lie about having Ministry approval. So far, the Ministry of Transportation says it hasn't issued any warnings to unlicensed Peterborough driving schools claiming to be licensed.
Mr. Covert isn't looking to slam other driving schools, he just wants new drivers to be aware of the issue when they're picking a company to take their G1 course with.
Under the Highway Traffic Act, schools that aren't Ministry-approved can't teach in-car lessons to beginners, Mr. Covert says.
And taking lessons with an unaccredited school could have repercussions for drivers, he adds.
According to Mr. Covert, licensed schools have access to a Ministry database -- a list of drivers who've successfully completed their G1 drivers course. When new drivers pass the course, their names are added to the list.
Passing the course allows drivers to take their G2 road test after eight months (as opposed to waiting one year without the course) and it also makes drivers eligible for discounts on car insurance when they receive their licenses.
If they're names aren't on the Ministry list, they won't get the discount.
"Eventually, it's going to catch up with (drivers)," Mr. Covert says about taking a course with an unlicensed school.
Further, there's a good chance schools that are operating without Ministry oversight likely don't have proper insurance to be teaching new drivers, Mr. Covert says.
"The vehicle has to have $2 million worth of liability," he says. "You also have to have a special rider (endorsement) that the vehicle is being used for a driver school and to teach G1 drivers."
According to the Toronto Star, some GTA instructors have found a way around licensing regulations, by offering in-car lessons under their own company name. The instructors often work for ministry-approved driving schools and while that school provides the in-class portion of the course, the instructor can pocket the cash that's paid for actual driving lessons.
In those cases, there's no accountability put on the instructor to follow proper course guidelines.
Mr. Covert says he's all for competition, but he wants drivers to know what they're getting when they pick a driving school.
"It's something to watch for," he says.
To check out the Ministry's list of approved driving schools -- and it's list of schools that have had their licences revoked, visit www.mto.gov.on.ca.

Ministry-approved schools have to re-new their licenses every three years.

Opinion: Slapping Penalty Points On Learner Drivers Isn’t The Answer To Safer Roads

It was announced last month that learner drivers who fail to display L plates will now receive penalty points as part of a new crackdown on dangerous driving.

For the first time, learner drivers who fail to display L or R plates will now receive two penalty points and a fixed charge fine. If the offence involves a court appearance, this will increase to four points. Drivers will also receive a penalty point if they are found to be driving unaccompanied while on a learner permit.

The crackdown on Learner drivers was introduced by Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe, following news that 2013 saw the annual number of road deaths rise for the first time in several years.

While it is hard to argue against the law, that all Learner drivers should be accompanied and display plates, in theory, the new penalty points system does nothing to support people who are willing, able and attempting to obtain a full-licence.

When applying for a learner’s permit, the state now requires you to sit a series of modules with a trained instructor. Each module must be signed off before the instructor can take you further in your driving career. From speaking with a number of instructors, the average student will take three lessons per module.

Based on a German model, the idea was introduced to promote safer driving as a whole.

The problem with this model is that learning to drive is now a privilege to those who can afford to spend roughly €1,500 on driving lessons.

For those who gained a permit before April 2011, they can still choose to learn to drive without the planned EDT modules, but there are still barriers to this method that have not been addressed with the new penalty point infrastructure.

Under the new laws, you must (and rightly should) display L plates. For those who are driving without a fully-licenced driver, they will be pulled over and will be given points.

Yet, nobody questions how a learner driver will gain confidence to drive alone if they never drive without supervision. How will they build up their own judgement, and road competence, if they can subconsciously rely on somebody else to monitor their every movement?

While it also sounds like an easy request to drive with a fully-licensed driver, finding someone with three-years’ driving experience to sit with you every time you want to take your car out is going to be a task in itself. There are also no designated roads for learners to practice their skills, and there is no monitoring of the standard of the driver accompanying the ‘novice’ which could lead to bad habits, or ill-advised tutoring.

Australia offer a two-tiered learner permit system – where learner drivers must pass a Hazard Perception skills test. Once this is completed, learner drivers can drive without supervision, but must apply for their full-licence within a set-time frame.

The theory though, is a smart one. If you require a certain set of skills to pass this test and you succeed, it naturally means that the final test will be a straight-forward affair. It also means that completely new drivers are aware that until they own a certain set of skills required for safe driving, they should probably stick with instructors and lessons before venturing out alone.

The system is more inclusive of learners – and takes away the pressure or nerves of taking a full-test.

In many parts of the UK, learner drivers can partake in a two week intensive driving course, where they are brought through the skills, techniques and road situations of being a driver. Following this, students can opt to take a driving test at the end of their two week course.

Although this argues against the importance of experience in theory, the pupils tend to have completed 90 hours of driving by the time they step forward for their test.

It may not be an ideal scenario, but there are perks. They learn to drive with a qualified instructor, they gain practical experience in the car (including using motorways and parallel parking) and then they have an opportunity to sit their test in a timely manner.

The current waiting time for a full-time test can be anything from two to four months depending on location and test centre preference. So if you are unsuccessful in your first attempts (whether that is skills, nerves or other factors) you then must wait at least eight weeks before you can attempt to tackle the roads again (legally).

I agree it’s important to monitor new drivers on our roads, and promote safe-driving practices, but delivering penalty points seems like an unfair punishment when there are no supports in place for the average person looking to gain experience as a driver.

While there are month-long waiting lists, and driving lessons still averaging €35- €50 per lesson, it is likely more learner drivers will continue to break the rules of the road and fail to display plates for fear of being landed with points before they even have the chance to own a full-licence.

Would it not be a better alternative to encourage L plates, but remove the points system once a skills test has been applied?

We all know the importance of keeping road deaths down. I’m just not sure Learner drivers deserve to shoulder such a hefty burden of the blame.

Learner driver crashes into petrol station shop

A DRIVING lesson turned into a nightmare for a young driver – after she lost control of the vehicle and ploughed straight into a garage shop.

The inexperienced motorist was just pulling out of the petrol station in Mayfield on Tuesday morning when she hit the accelerator instead of the brake.

Onlookers watched in horror as the Vauxhall Zafira smashed its way into the Shell shopfront, narrowly missing staff who were serving customers inside.

One told how the collision could have killed a garage worker who narrowly avoided being hurt.

Eyewitness Sam Bogie, from nearby Easthouses, watched the drama unfold as he walked his dog.

He said: “I heard an almighty crash. I ran over and saw the back of a learner’s car sticking out of the front of the shop. I ran over to help but fortunately there didn’t seem to be any injuries – they were in total shock though.

“The guy Ian, who works in the shop, had a lucky escape as another few feet to the left and he could have been a goner.”

Andrew Ferrier, from Mayfield, said the people involved were fortunate not to have been more seriously hurt.

“My sister was filling up with petrol at the time and couldn’t believe her eyes,” he said.

“She said the car was just pulling away when it just went straight instead of turning.

“I’m just glad no-one was seriously injured as it could have been much worse.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police in Midlothian attended at the Shell filling station in Mayfield Road at around 11am on Tuesday, February 3 after a Vauxhall Zafira collided with the front of the shop.

“No-one was injured during this incident.”

Shell employee Samantha Caw, who works at the garage, said: “Thankfully no-one was hurt and I’m sure the bosses at Shell will be doing all they can get to get the place open.

“I am sure I speak for everyone who works for Shell to say that we are all slightly shaken up and are just grateful that no staff or customers were injured.”

It is not yet known when the petrol station will reopen.

The mishap follows an incident last September when a driver was forced to dive for his belongings when his car plunged into the Union Canal near Ratho.

The Nissan Primera coasted 100 metres down the hill and became submerged in the waterway after the handbrake came off unexpectedly.
